I’m sure a lot of you have previously heard of the soap opera Jadi Pocong. Yes, this early 2000s soap drama was quite extraordinary because it debuted Pocong Mumun, a legendary ghost figure in Indonesian cinema. The H. Mandra-created soap drama will now be adapted for the big screen in 2022.

Mumun is a movie about Mumun (Acha Septriasa), whose twin sister Mimin (Acha Septriasa) makes her the target of a debt collector. As a result, Mumun tragically dies. Husen (H. Mandra) neglects to untie the village beauty’s shroud during the funeral procedure, which sends him skulking around as a pocong ghost.

A movie that has the vibe of a soap opera
The genesis narrative of Mumun before she turned into a pocong differs slightly from the one in the Jadi Pocong soap opera. The big-screen adaptation, meanwhile, still has a soap opera, or at the very least, TV movie, vibe to it. The conflict is a classic soap opera plot that is straightforward and devoid of surprises.

The production of this movie also has a soap opera air to it because it doesn’t feel “grand.” Everything about the film gives the impression that we are watching a soap opera, including the photography, language, scene changes, and actor blocking. The movie, however, would have had the potential to start a horror franchise with the pocong concept if it had been treated with greater fervour.

Nevertheless, the picture isn’t necessarily made worse by the soap opera-like atmosphere. In fact, seeing it can bring back memories of watching the soap opera version for fans who have previously watched the Jadi Pocong series. Additionally, the movie stars H. Mandra and Eddies Adelia, who formerly played Mumun in the serial opera.

For those who grew up in the early 2000s, Pocong Mumun is a truly terrible figure. In the cinematic adaption, the terror of its existence as a legendary ghost is successfully revived. Despite being repeated numerous times, the build-up before Mumun appears as a pocong is highly effective at agitating the audience.

To shock the audience, the movie, however, overuses jump scares. As a result, because they know when the recurring jump scare moments would occur, viewers are no longer astonished. However, the Pocong persona continues to frighten the viewers, just as it did when they were watching the soap opera two decades ago.

This movie includes humour, just like its soap opera equivalent. The comedy in this movie, however, feels uninspired and occasionally even cringeworthy, according to KINCIR. For instance, the debt collectors’ quips start off humorous but soon lose their charm and become embarrassing.

H. Mandra, reprising his role as Husen, the gravedigger, effectively saves the comedy genre in this movie. Mandra’s odd comments never fail to make the crowd chuckle. The comedy in the movie is genuinely boring aside from that.

To heighten the audience’s dread, the movie uses gore in addition to jump scares. Although not numerous, the use of these graphic aspects in some moments is rather shocking. The fact that the movie has these scary components may be seen favourably by horror fans.

However, KINCIR claims that the presence of these graphic aspects is inappropriate for the film’s PG-13 rating. For viewers aged 13 and older, there is one scene that shows a close-up of the victim’s face covered in a lot of blood. KINCIR thinks that a 17+ classification would be more appropriate for this movie.
