In this suspenseful story, a persistent detective and a clever academic team up to track down a killer witchdoctor whose horrible crimes include dismembering innocent victims. The spectator, on the other hand, yearns for a stronger connection as the narrative attempts to juggle two separate tales. Flashback flashbacks explore the inner turmoil of the main character but do not advance the broader plot; instead, they operate as extraneous exposition and filler that slows down the already brisk runtime. Despite these flaws, former NFL player Vernon Davis gives an outstanding performance as a threatening and damaged antagonist.
Our voyage starts in Rome, when Guiseppe Zeno’s portrayal of Italian detective Mario Lavazza and his committed task force discover a terrifying crime scene. A young woman has been brutally tortured as the methodical murderer dismembers her body in graphic detail. Cole Hauser’s character, detective Lucas Boyd, struggles with his own tragedy while seeking justice in Jackson, Mississippi. Boyd storms into a hotel room with the help of his colleague, played by Murielle Hilaire, to save a fugitive girl from the grasp of a pervert. Boyd, who is overcome with sadness, administers his own brand of strict justice while his partner protects the girl. In close proximity, at Milsaps College, Morgan Freeman’s captivating portrayal of Professor Mackles educates his students on the mysterious world of dark arts and native medicines.
Lavazza finds himself pursuing a suspect at night in an exciting chase through the streets of Rome. Vernon Davis portrays the towering figure known as Randoku, who moves with the elegance of a gazelle and leaves a path of helpless police officers in his wake. Randoku easily eludes Lavazza’s pursuit while carrying a specialist blade. Randoku urgently makes a call and sets up a meeting in an effort to leave town. He is being led to his destination by an unidentified benefactor.
Boyd soon gets a disturbing call, which brings him to a ghastly find by the river. The discovery of yet another person who has been brutally mutilated rocks the inquiry. Boyd travels to Milsaps College to speak with Professor Mackles about his perspectives. A quick Google search shows that the malicious power at work uses a dark ritualistic magic called Muti. Boyd, Mackles, and Lavazza must assemble the pieces of this puzzle in order to find Randoku and understand his depraved motivations.
“The Ritual Killer” features numerous exhilarating chase scenes that are evocative of an athletic track meet amid the intense pursuit. While doing his gruesome actions, Randoku routinely outruns and outmanoeuvres the gasping law enforcement personnel. Although the aftermath of his murders is shown, the crimes themselves are not, creating a gruesome and disturbing impression. The filmmaker made a smart choice by using a former professional athlete, as seen by the fact that Randoku’s constant running almost borders on the ludicrous. Davis’ commanding appearance and menacing accent give him a terrifying presence on screen, but some wish they could have seen more of his evil side.
Unfortunately, the portrayal of police work in the movie verges on the absurd. The movie makes no attempt to explain how the Italian authorities locate Randoku, thus the method is still a mystery. In contrast, Boyd almost invites law enforcement’s notice when he stumbles upon Randoku, showing the witchdoctor’s lack of caution in his evil deeds. The relationship between the Rome-based detectives and Jackson seems flimsy and artificial, with no apparent underlying rationale. Instead, without adequate narrative support, the audience is asked to accept this implausible confluence.
Although “The Ritual Killer”‘s subplots explore Boyd’s tragic personal history and Mackles’ African ancestry, they eventually fall flat. Boyd could have simply continued his investigation online to learn more about Randoku’s nefarious Muti-inspired plans, making these side plots largely unneeded.
The partnership between Wonderfilm Media, Black Diamond Films, Lervolino & Lady, and Bacardi Entertainment on “The Ritual Killer” is impressive. On March 10th, this gripping movie is slated for simultaneous release on VOD and in theatres. It is full of suspense and promises to defy audience assumptions of a typical thriller.
